Welcome to the Institute for Landscape and Open Space

The Institute for Landscape and Open Space (ILF) develops innovative tools and practice-oriented solutions for the entire scope of landscape architecture - ranging from small to large scales. The ILF wants to efficiently support and design practically relevant solutions for actors from administration, economy and politics. The institute is closely linked to the department of ‘Landscape Architecture’ at the HSR Hochschule für Technik Rapperswil - the University of Applied Sciences in Rapperswil.

Open Space and Gardens

The ILF supports municipalities and cantonal administrations with the planning and development of open and green spaces in urban areas. Special importance is given to urban ecology and the bridging of design and ecology; for instance promoting biodiversity.  Relevant aspects of our work include analysis of the needs of multiple users and the costs and practicalities of the implementation of projects. Other important foci of our work include the use of plants, innovative construction techniques, and new materials in garden and landscape design.
